Double clicking on the mesh in the Specialized Node Editor will open the FBX file. Here is where I select 'Build Assets from FBX' when I do so, and go to add the mesh to a 3D backdrop or a sampler the editor instantly crashes.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

Yes indeed this is a bug in the editor. It will be fixed in the next release.
For now, you should close your particle editor when rebuilding assets from FBX (just for backdrop meshes, i haven't seen any problem with mesh samplers).
